Why is Compassion Healing?

‘Compassion is a profound human emotion prompted by the pain of others. More vigorous than empathy, the feeling commonly gives rise to an active desire to alleviate another’s suffering.”

When I was healing and was a complete emotional mess, compassion was a invaluable gift.  Those that were truly able to feel my pain and listen and be there for me were like angels from heaven.  My heart was so heavy and I felt completely lost and alone.  It was in those moments that I really learned what compassion was.

When I was in the deep dark hole and didn’t know if I could climb out, compassion helped lift me one step forward.

“Compassion is that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. It crushes and destroys the pain of others.” – The Buddha.

Compassion isn’t always easy.  It can be very uncomfortable feeling the feelings that precede compassion.  A natural response is to run or hide and not face what those feelings are.  In that moment a gift of compassion can be lost.

“Compassion literally means to feel with, to suffer with.  Everyone is capable of compassion, and yet everyone tends to avoid it because it’s uncomfortable.  And the avoidance produces psychic numbing — resistance to experiencing our pain for the world and other beings.”  Joanna Macy

Give compassion to those around you that are suffering from cancer or other illnesses or loss.  Don’t avoid them.  Don’t avoid your feelings.  Face them with courage, so you are able to feel and be courage for those you love.  Not only will you assist those you love in their healing journey, but you also will take a step in your healing journey, called life.

Dalai Lama has said, “If you want others to be happy,
 practice compassion.
If you want to be happy,
 practice compassion.”
